HELP THE BOROUGH HELP YOU THIS WINTER
With the onset of Winter 2010-2011, the Public Works Department is expecting a combination of frigid weather and a rash of snow and ice storms. Snowstorms followed by warm weather are easier to handle than those storms that come in rapid succession followed by very cold weather which can exhaust both the borough workforces, the budget and most importantly the residents and business owners. All borough personnel will continue to work hard in coping with the conditions.
We are asking for cooperation and the assistance of our residents, business and property owners in order to speed the clean up of snow and ice in order to make the roads safer for all.
Please do not place snow or ice in the roadway. If you hire a contractor to remove the snow please advise them of the regulations. Perhaps it would be a good idea to wait until the storm ends or the plowing is complete to begin shoveling your property.
Please do not place garbage or recycling cans on the street to hinder snowplow efforts.
The following ordinances are strictly enforced during a snow event and we ask you obey the laws in order to avoid a summons.
312-36 Parking during snow emergencies.
It shall be unlawful to park or leave unattended standing any vehicle in the public streets or highways within the limits of the Borough of Maywood during a snow or ice storm after snow or ice has fallen so as to cover the public streets and highways within the Borough of Maywood, and such prohibition shall continue until such streets or highways shall be cleared of snow and/or ice.
Any vehicle parked or standing in violation of this section shall be deemed a nuisance and a menace to the safe and proper regulation of traffic, and any peace officer at any time or such Road Department member designated from time to time by the Superintendent of Roads during snow removal and emergencies may provide for the removal of such vehicles. The owner shall pay the reasonable costs of removal and storage which may result from such removal before regaining possession of the vehicle.
287-45 Duty to remove snow and ice.
Every person, owner, tenant or occupant of improved or unimproved premises or property abutting upon any public street shall remove or cause to have removed all snow and ice from such abutting sidewalks so as to allow free passage of pedestrians within 12 hours of daylight after the same shall fall or be formed thereon. In the event that snow or ice has fallen or been formed upon any property as hereinabove set forth and is so frozen or impacted as to make removal impractical in the judgment of the Building Subcode Inspector, Public Works Manager or member of the regular Maywood Police Department, then the owner, tenant or occupant thereof, as required, shall forthwith cause said snow or ice to be thoroughly covered with clean sand, ashes, sawdust or rock salt within 12 hours of daylight after the accumulation or formation of such snow or ice.
